Stronghold

Every trip to the End starts at a stronghold. This Minecraft stronghold finder shows the nearest strongholds to spawn for your seed, so you can skip the long eye of ender chase. Enter your seed, pick a result and copy a /tp command. The command drops you on the surface right above the structure. From there, dig down to the portal room and get ready for the dragon.

What a Stronghold Is and Why You Need One

A stronghold is a large underground maze of stone brick rooms. It holds the only end portal in the Overworld. You need to fill the portal frame with eyes of ender to reach the End and fight the ender dragon.

Strongholds also have libraries, prison cells, fountains and storerooms. Library chests often hold enchanted books. Corridor and storeroom chests can contain iron, gold, ender pearls and gear. Watch out for silverfish, though. Some stone bricks are infested and release them when broken.

How Strongholds Generate

In Java Edition, every world has exactly 128 strongholds. They do not use a grid. Instead, they sit in eight rings around the world center.

  • The first ring has 3 strongholds, 1,280 to 2,816 blocks from the center.
  • The second ring has 6, from 4,352 to 5,888 blocks.
  • The third ring has 10, from 7,424 to 8,960 blocks.

Strongholds in a ring are spread at roughly even angles. So if you find one in the first ring, the other two are about 120 degrees away around the center.

They generate mostly underground, but they can cut into caves, ravines or even the ocean floor. Bedrock Edition works differently. It has no rings and no fixed count, and some strongholds generate below villages.

Finding a Stronghold in Game

The classic method uses eyes of ender. Throw one and it floats toward the nearest stronghold. Walk in that direction, then throw again. When the eye drops straight down, the stronghold is below you.

Each throw has a chance to break the eye, so bring spares. Eyes cost blaze powder and ender pearls, which adds up fast. You also need up to 12 eyes to fill the portal frame, depending on how many it already has.

A seed map saves most of that cost. You only need eyes for the portal itself.

Using the Stronghold Finder Map

First, choose your edition and version. Then enter your seed. The map marks the nearest strongholds and lists them by distance from spawn.

Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. The teleport puts you on the ground above the stronghold. Next, dig a staircase down until you hit stone bricks. The marked point is the starting staircase, so the portal room may be some distance away inside the maze.

Use the 3D view to check the terrain above. A stronghold under an ocean or a mountain needs a different plan than one under flat plains.

Stronghold Version History

Strongholds arrived in Java Edition Beta 1.8. At first, each world had only three. Java 1.9 raised the count to 128 and introduced the ring layout used today. Later updates mainly adjusted biome choice and loot.

The finder supports Java back to 1.12, so older worlds with the 128-stronghold layout map correctly.

Tips for Exploring a Stronghold

Strongholds are mazes, so getting lost is the biggest risk. Place torches on one side of every corridor as you go. Then follow them back on the way out.

The portal room is easy to recognize once you find it. Look for a raised platform over a lava pool, with stairs leading up to the frame. A silverfish spawner sits on those stairs. Break it or light it up before you start placing eyes.

Also bring the right gear for the next step:

  • Enough eyes of ender to finish the frame.
  • Food, a bow, plenty of arrows and blocks.
  • A water bucket and armor for the dragon fight.

Beds explode in the End, which some players use against the dragon. However, that tactic is risky. Finally, set your spawn near the stronghold before you jump in. A nearby bed means a short trip back if the fight goes wrong.
