Ocean monuments hold gold blocks, sponges and some of the toughest mobs in the early game. This Minecraft ocean monument finder shows where they generate from your seed. Enter a seed, pick the closest result and copy the /tp command. You land at the surface above the monument. Then bring water breathing and dive in.
What an Ocean Monument Holds
An ocean monument is a huge prismarine temple on the ocean floor. It is guarded by guardians and three elder guardians. Elder guardians give you Mining Fatigue, which stops you from breaking blocks quickly.
The treasure room in the center holds eight gold blocks hidden behind dark prismarine. Sponge rooms contain wet sponges, the only natural source in many worlds. Elder guardians also drop a wet sponge when killed.
Monuments have no chests. The real value comes from prismarine, sea lanterns and a guardian farm built on the site.
How Ocean Monuments Generate
In Java Edition, monuments use regions 32 chunks wide, with at least 5 chunks between attempts. The position inside each region leans toward the center.
Each attempt needs deep ocean biomes. The surrounding area must also be ocean, so the monument has room. Shallow ocean, rivers and beaches block it.
Because deep oceans are large in modern versions, monuments are fairly common once you reach open water. The tricky part is knowing which deep ocean holds one.
Finding a Monument in Game
Cartographer villagers sell an ocean explorer map. It marks the nearest monument with a small icon. You still need a boat and some time.
You can also search by boat at night. Monuments glow with sea lanterns, and guardians attack you from below. However, deep water hides them well from the surface. A seed map shows the exact spot before you leave land.
Watch your map as you sail, too. Deep ocean water looks darker on a regular map than shallow water. That helps you narrow the search to the right zone. Then dive and look for the glow of sea lanterns. Once you spot the prismarine walls, mark the spot with a block on the surface so you can find it again.
Using the Ocean Monument Finder Map
Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map lists the nearest monuments by distance from spawn.
Click any result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. You arrive at the surface above the monument. From there, drink a potion of water breathing and swim down. Wear Depth Strider boots if you have them.
Use the 2D view to check the ocean around it. A monument close to shore makes a guardian farm much easier to build and supply.
Ocean Monument Version History
Ocean monuments were added in Java Edition 1.8 with guardians, prismarine and sponges. Java 1.13, Update Aquatic, changed ocean biomes, which shifted where monuments can appear. Java 1.18 reshaped oceans again with the new terrain system.
Tips for Raiding an Ocean Monument
Fighting underwater is hard, so gear up first. The most useful items are:
- Potions of water breathing: they let you stay down for minutes at a time.
- Potions of night vision: deep water is dark, and this makes the halls readable.
- Respiration and Aqua Affinity: a helmet with these helps you breathe and mine faster underwater.
- Depth Strider boots: they make swimming much quicker.
- Milk: it clears Mining Fatigue for a short time.
Guardians fire a laser after a short charge. Break line of sight by moving behind pillars. Elder guardians are slower to kill, so take them one at a time.
Many players drain parts of the monument with sand or sponges. Once you clear the elders, a drained monument becomes a good spot for a guardian farm. That farm gives prismarine, fish and plenty of XP.
