End City

End cities hold elytra, shulker shells and some of the best gear in the game. This Minecraft end city finder shows where they generate on the outer End islands from your seed. Enter a seed, choose the nearest city and copy the /tp command. You land on solid ground at the city. Then look for an end ship on the nearby bridges.

What an End City Holds

An end city is a set of tall purpur towers on the outer islands of the End. Shulkers guard them. Their bullets make you float, and they drop shulker shells for shulker boxes.

Chests can hold diamonds, emeralds, iron, gold, saddles and enchanted diamond or iron gear. They also have a chance to contain the spire armor trim.

Some cities have an end ship docked nearby. Its treasure room holds a pair of elytra. The ship's bow also carries a dragon head, the only one you can get in Survival.

How End Cities Generate

End cities only spawn on the outer End islands. These start roughly 1,000 blocks from the central island, past a large void gap.

In Java Edition, cities use regions 20 chunks wide, with at least 11 chunks between attempts. The position inside each region leans toward the center. Each attempt also needs a large, high island. Small or low islands cause the city to fail.

Not every city has a ship. A city can have at most one, so you may need to check several to find elytra.

Finding an End City in Game

First, defeat the ender dragon. Then an end gateway portal appears near the edge of the main island. Throw an ender pearl into it to reach the outer islands.

From there, many players bridge or fly across islands looking for purple towers. Ships can be hard to spot behind tall cities. A seed map shows every city in range, so you can head for the closest one.

Each end gateway sends you to a random spot on the outer islands. So you may land far from the nearest city. Build your own path from there, or throw pearls between islands. Once you get elytra, you can fly over the void and search a much larger area. Until then, the map is the safest guide.

Using the End City Finder Map

Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map marks the end cities nearest to the End center, sorted by distance.

Click a result to copy coordinates or a /tp command. You arrive on solid ground at the city, not over the void. Bring blocks, ender pearls and slow falling potions in case a shulker sends you floating.

Use the 3D view to look for an end ship near the city. Ships float off the side, connected by a bridge.

End City Version History

End cities came with Java Edition 1.9, the Combat Update. That update also added shulkers, elytra, purpur blocks and chorus plants. Java 1.20 added the spire armor trim to end city chests.

Tips for Raiding an End City

Shulkers are the main threat. Their bullets give you Levitation, which lifts you into the air. If it wears off over a void gap, you fall.

• Milk: drink it to remove Levitation right away.
• Slow falling potions: they keep a fall from killing you.
• A shield: it blocks shulker bullets.
• Ender pearls: they get you back to safety fast.

Fight shulkers from cover. They hide in their shells and take less damage when closed. Hit them when they open up.

Many players also use Levitation on purpose to climb the towers. Then they place blocks to stand on at the top.

Once you have elytra, travel gets much easier. Fly between islands with fireworks to boost you. Repair elytra with phantom membranes or Mending.

Chorus fruit grows on the outer islands. Eating it teleports you short distances, which can save you in a pinch.
