Villages meet the new terrain
Version 1.18 reshaped land, so villages now sit among steep hills and high ridges. The game also lets villages generate in meadows, which are flowery highland biomes.
Look at the terrain around your village:
- Hills beside the settlement give you a view and a good lookout.
- Caves can open near the edge, so check for dark mouths at night.
- Rivers still shape streets and farms.
Because the village is at spawn, you have time to prepare. Set up beds, trade for emeralds and make a lit perimeter before exploring the mountain biomes.
Torch the village outskirts to stop mobs spawning. Even a small village loses villagers to zombies if the paths are dark, so light the edges and paths properly.
Digging with a village as the base
The 1.18 depths are larger than ever, so a village makes an excellent supply post. Villagers can sell you tools, food and enchanted books so you start mining better prepared.
Take the following steps:
- Trade crops for emeralds, then buy an iron pickaxe or bread.
- Dig a shaft or staircase near the village to reach y -59 for diamonds.
- Keep a bed in the village for resets.
Cave entrances may open up during mining, so keep a bucket of water ready. New cave types such as lush caves and dripstone caves are only a short dig away from some villages, and they give you glow berries and copper.
Return to the village to smelt your haul, sell extra items and rest. With a hub at 0 blocks from spawn, you will rarely lose time wandering.
Read how the seed hunter picks and rates seeds.
FAQ
Can villages generate on mountains in 1.18?
Villages can appear on hills and slopes, but not in the highest peaks. They are tied to biomes like plains, meadow, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy plains.
Why do I hear zombies from a cave near my village?
The new large caves can open next to settlements. Place lights at the entrance and fence the opening.
What do villagers buy in 1.18?
They buy crops, coal, paper and other goods, in exchange for emeralds.
Is a village at spawn good for diamond hunting?
Yes. Use it as a base and dig down to y -59 where diamonds are most common.
