We checked 1,800 Bedrock seeds on build 26.50, and 431 of them place a stronghold within 1,000 blocks of spawn. The closest we found is just 150 blocks away, with an average match around 456 blocks. The top seed spawns in savanna, so you can walk to the End portal across open ground.

Walking to the End portal on a short route

A stronghold is normally the long middle chore of the game. Here it becomes a short errand, so you can start thinking about the dragon before you even have diamonds.

Craft eyes of ender by combining an ender pearl with blaze powder, then throw one and follow its flight. It floats toward the stronghold, and a stronghold near spawn means you may only need one or two throws. Each eye has a chance to break instead of dropping, so carry spare.

• Throw from where you stand, then walk the direction it flew.
• When the eye starts sinking into the ground, dig down.
• Stock a water bucket before you enter, because rooms below can hold lava.

The map on this site shows the stronghold position, so you can skip the throwing entirely and walk straight to the spot if you prefer.

Inside the stone bricks: libraries, cells and the portal room

Strongholds are made of stone bricks that may be cracked, mossy or infested with silverfish. Breaking infested blocks releases silverfish, so mine them with a pickaxe and kill them quickly before they call friends.

Look for these rooms as you explore:

• Library: bookshelves, a chest and sometimes enchanted books, great for a first enchanting table.
• Prison cells: iron doors and tiny rooms with the odd chest.
• Storeroom and altar chests: bread, iron, apples and the occasional diamond or saddle.

The portal room has twelve end portal frames and a lava pool beneath. Each frame has a 10 percent chance to already hold an eye. Place your eyes in the empty frames and step through only when you are ready. Before you jump, bring beds, blocks, a bow, food and your best armour, then set a bed near the portal for an easy return.
