Mangrove Swamp

Mangrove swamps are warm, muddy wetlands packed with tangled mangrove trees. Their roots arch over the water, and mud covers almost the entire floor. You need this biome for mangrove wood and lots of mud. This mangrove swamp finder searches your seed for you. The map above jumps to the nearest one and marks it with a biome icon.

Where mangrove swamps generate

Mangrove swamps form in warm areas with very high erosion. So the land is flat and sits at water level. In cooler areas, regular swamps take their place.

Typical neighbours are deserts, savannas, jungles, forests and plains. Mangrove swamps never touch the ocean directly, and rivers cannot flow through them. They are less common than regular swamps, but they often cover wide areas once you find them.

Inside the biome, the water is shallow and broken up by roots and mud islands. Boats get stuck easily, so walking or building a path is often faster.

What you find in a mangrove swamp

The floor is mostly mud, with a few patches of grass or dirt. Mangrove trees vary from short to very tall. Their roots spread over the water, and moss carpets often grow on top of the roots.

  • Blocks: mud, mangrove logs, mangrove roots, mangrove leaves and moss carpets.
  • Plants: seagrass, lily pads, glow lichen and firefly bushes near water.
  • Mobs: warm frogs, tropical fish, slimes and bogged.

Some mangrove trees carry bee nests. However, there are no swamp huts here.

How to locate a mangrove swamp

Paste your seed into the map and select your edition. The map flies to the closest mangrove swamp and marks its shape. For other options, open the list on the left and click a result. Each click recentres the map on that swamp.

Inside the game, F3 reads minecraft:mangrove_swamp. You will recognise it by the dense, low canopy and the brown mud. To arrive fast, teleport with /tp @s X 90 Z. Be careful, though, because the roots make walking slow.

Mangrove swamp tips for builders

Mud is the big resource here. Dry it on dripstone to make clay, or craft packed mud and mud bricks. So a mangrove swamp is an endless clay source.

Mangrove wood has a deep red colour, and mangrove roots work as decorative blocks. Propagules from the leaves let you replant the trees, even underwater.

For mobs, frogs are the only land animals. That makes food tricky, so bring some. Also, slimes spawn here at night between Y=50 and Y=70, just like in normal swamps. Bogged with poison arrows add risk after dark.

Crafting with mud and mangrove wood

Mud opens a whole set of building blocks. Here is the basic chain:

  • Packed mud: craft one mud with one wheat.
  • Mud bricks: craft four packed mud into four mud bricks.
  • Clay: place mud above pointed dripstone and wait.

Mud bricks come in stairs, slabs and walls. They give warm, earthy builds a soft texture.

Mangrove wood is just as versatile. You get planks, stairs, doors and boats in a deep red tone. Mangrove roots can also be waterlogged, so they look natural in ponds. Also, muddy mangrove roots form when you combine roots with mud.

To collect lots of mud quickly, use a shovel. Alternatively, pour a water bottle onto dirt to turn it into mud.

Mangrove swamp version history

The biome was added in Java 1.19, The Wild Update. Snapshot 22w15a made mud reach down to stone and added tropical fish and moss carpets. Java 1.21 added bogged. Java 1.21.5 let firefly bushes generate near water.

Mangrove Swamp FAQ

What spawns in a mangrove swamp?

Warm frogs are the only land animals. Tropical fish swim in the water, and slimes and bogged spawn at night.

Do witch huts spawn in mangrove swamps?

No. Swamp huts only generate in the regular swamp biome.

Is the mangrove swamp rare?

It is uncommon. It needs a warm climate with very high erosion, but patches can be large.

How do you get clay from mud?

Place mud on a block above pointed dripstone. The water drips out over time and the mud turns into clay.

Can villages spawn in mangrove swamps?

No. Villages do not generate inside the biome, but they often appear on its borders.
