Sunflower Plains

Sunflower plains are a rarer version of regular plains, with large patches of tall yellow sunflowers. They look great and are the only natural source of sunflowers. This sunflower plains finder shows where the biome sits in your seed. Enter the seed above, and the map moves to the nearest field of sunflowers and outlines every other patch around it.

Where sunflower plains generate

The biome needs a moderate temperature and very dry air. It also tends to appear where the terrain value called weirdness is positive. That combination is less common, so sunflower plains are much smaller and rarer than normal plains.

You often find them beside flower forests, usually with a river in between. They also touch regular plains, cherry groves and dappled forests. Dripstone caves are fairly common under the inland parts.

Because the biome is small, it can be easy to walk right past it. The sunflowers stand out from a hill, though, so look for a yellow haze over the grass.

What you find in sunflower plains

The main feature is, of course, the sunflowers. They are two blocks tall and grow in dense patches. The rest of the biome looks like plains, with grass, scattered oaks and some flowers.

  • Animals: sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses and donkeys.
  • Plants: sunflowers, tall grass, cornflowers, mushrooms, pumpkins and sugar cane.
  • Trees: plains oaks, some with bee nests.

There is one big difference, though. In Java Edition, villages and pillager outposts do not generate in sunflower plains. In Bedrock Edition they can.

How to use the sunflower plains finder

Start by entering your seed and choosing Java or Bedrock. The map then pans to the nearest sunflower plains and marks it with a biome icons outline. More results appear in the list on the left, ordered by distance. Click one to move the map there.

In game, the F3 screen shows minecraft:sunflower_plains once you stand inside. From a distance, look for yellow dots across flat grass. To travel quickly, copy the coordinates from the map and use /tp @s X 120 Z in a world with cheats.

Why visit sunflower plains

Sunflowers have a useful trick. Their faces always point east, so they work as a natural compass. This helps when you are lost early in the game.

Also, each sunflower gives yellow dye, and you can bone meal one to get a second sunflower. So a small farm here gives you endless yellow dye. Horses spawn here as well, because the biome shares the plains mob list.

For builders, the flat land and bright colours make a great backdrop for a cottage or a farm. However, remember that you cannot expect a village here in Java, so bring your own bed.

Sunflower plains vs regular plains

The two biomes share almost everything. The grass, the oaks and the animals are the same. However, a few details set them apart.

  • Flowers: sunflower plains have dense sunflower patches, while regular plains have tulips in patches.
  • Structures: regular plains get villages and outposts in Java. Sunflower plains do not.
  • Size: regular plains cover huge areas, while sunflower plains form smaller patches.

So if you want a village, use the plains page instead. If you want sunflowers or a rare biome for Adventuring Time, this is the right place. Also, the two often sit side by side, so one trip can cover both.

Sunflower plains history

The biome arrived in Java 1.7.2. Its ID changed from mutated_plains to sunflower_plains in 1.13. Cornflowers were added in 1.14, and bee nests on its trees came in 1.15. Since 1.18 it counts toward the Adventuring Time advancement.

Sunflower Plains FAQ

Are sunflower plains rare?

Yes, they are uncommon. They need a dry, mild climate with positive weirdness, so patches are smaller and farther apart than regular plains.

Can villages spawn in sunflower plains?

Not in Java Edition. Villages and pillager outposts can generate in sunflower plains in Bedrock Edition.

Which way do sunflowers face?

Sunflowers always face east. You can use them to find your direction without a compass.

Where else can I get sunflowers?

Sunflowers only generate naturally in this biome. However, using bone meal on a sunflower drops another one, so a single plant is enough.

Do horses spawn in sunflower plains?

Yes. Horses and donkeys spawn here, just like in regular plains.
