Meeting the city when it was brand new

The ancient city debuted in 1.19, and the earliest releases of this version have a smaller loot list than later ones. The chests offer enchanted golden apples, Mending and Soul Speed books, diamond gear, saddles and music disc 13 or cat.

Echo shards are a new reward. Collect them from chests and craft a recovery compass, which points to your last death spot.

• Check the chests along the building walls.
• Look for sculk catalysts, which spread sculk when mobs die.
• Take reinforced deepslate if you see it, but know it cannot be mined in survival.

Later 1.19 point releases may add extras, and the version you play matters. If you want items such as the Swift Sneak book, use a newer 1.19 release or a later version.

Only 32 blocks from spawn, the city is near, so prepare a staircase and torches carefully.

Starting in a meadow

Meadows are flower-filled highlands from the 1.18 update. They have rabbits, sheep, donkeys and bees, and some of the oak and birch trees carry bee nests.

Plan a basic prep:

• Gather wood from the nearby trees and craft tools.
• Take wool from sheep for beds and carpet.
• Collect honey bottles for quick food.

Wool and carpet matter because they help dampen sculk sensor vibrations. Craft a stack of carpets before the descent.

The deep dark also contains sculk shriekers that call the warden. Remember the rule: sneak, avoid loud actions and use wool. Take enough food and bring a bow only for emergencies.

Because meadow sits on high ground, you might need to dig a lot of blocks. Build a clear staircase and light it so you can retrace your steps when you leave.
