Height, caves and ore after the 1.18 rewrite

The 1.18 update stretched the world from y -64 up to 320. It also introduced noise caves such as cheese, spaghetti and noodle tunnels, and aquifers that flood parts of the underground.

Ore changed too, and it favours specific depths:

  • Diamonds are most common near y -59.
  • Iron peaks around y 16, with another peak high in mountains.
  • Copper is common at about y 48, and coal appears widely.

Mining at y -54 and below can reveal lava lakes, so carry a water bucket. Deepslate replaces stone at lower levels and takes longer to mine.

A good 1.18 seed offers a safe place to surface, with caves close by. Many players now dig down in a quiet corner, find a cave entrance and explore instead of strip mining.

Peaks, meadows and the surface drama

The surface changed as much as the caves. New mountain biomes include jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, snowy slopes and groves, and the meadow offers a flowery contrast.

Some thoughts for your first hour:

  • Climb a slope and scout before building.
  • Carry a bucket of water to cancel falls on tall cliffs.
  • Look for goats on peaks, since their horns can be turned into goat horn instruments.

Lush caves have glow berries and axolotls, while dripstone caves hold pointed dripstone, which can hurt if you fall onto it.

The top seed starts on plains, so you can begin on flat land and move toward the mountains in daylight. Try to make a camp near the edge between plains and slope, and keep an eye out for caves opening on cliff sides.

FAQ

What is the best Y level for diamonds in 1.18?

Around y -59 is the most common spot, just above the bedrock layer. Remember that lava lakes also appear near there.

Why is the world taller in 1.18?

The world height now runs from y -64 to 320, giving more room for caves and mountains.

What are aquifers?

They are underground pockets of water or lava that fill cave areas. They can flood a tunnel suddenly, so dig carefully.

Can I find goats in plains?

No. Goats live on mountain slopes and peaks, so you will need to climb.
