The cold ocean is a dark indigo sea that forms in chilly climates. Its gravel floor holds kelp and a little seagrass, and salmon swim alongside cod. This cold ocean finder scans your seed and marks the nearest cold water with a biome icon on the map above. It helps you find shipwrecks and stone ruins near taiga coasts.
Where cold oceans generate
Cold oceans sit in cool climate zones. You usually find them along taiga and old growth taiga coastlines. When the temperature rises, they turn into regular oceans. When it falls, they become frozen oceans.
Further out to sea, the floor deepens and the biome changes into a deep cold ocean. Cold oceans never border mushroom fields.
On the map, cold oceans often hug long stretches of taiga coast. They also form wide belts between temperate and frozen water. As a result, sailing through one often takes you from milder water toward icy seas. That gradual shift makes cold oceans easy to spot once you know the pattern.
What you find in the cold ocean
The floor is mainly gravel, much like a regular ocean. Kelp grows well here, but seagrass is sparser than in warmer seas.
- Fish: cod and salmon in roughly equal numbers.
- Other mobs: squid, the nautilus and drowned.
- Structures: shipwrecks, cold stone ocean ruins and ruined portals.
Notably, dolphins do not spawn in cold oceans. Head to warmer water if you want to follow a dolphin to treasure.
How to find a cold ocean in your world
In game, look for a darker blue sea next to spruce forests. The water color changes clearly when you cross into a cold ocean.
With this map, there is no guesswork. Paste your seed and pick your edition. Next, the map glides to the closest cold ocean and outlines it. The list on the left holds more results, ranked by distance. Click any of them to inspect the area.
When you are ready, run /tp @s X 70 Z with the coordinates shown. Or note them down and travel by boat.
Cold ocean tips
Cold ocean ruins are made of stone bricks, so they are easy to recognize. They often sit in clusters. Check their chests and brush their suspicious gravel for loot.
Salmon are a reliable food source here. Fish from a boat, or kill them for a quick meal. Finally, kelp from cold oceans can be dried and packed into blocks for furnace fuel.
Cold ocean finder: picking the right spot
Cold oceans are common, so you usually have several choices. Use the list on the left to compare distance first. Then look at what borders each area.
A cold ocean beside a taiga gives you spruce wood, sweet berries and wolves close to the water. One beside a frozen ocean puts icebergs and blue ice within reach. Meanwhile, a cold ocean that opens into a deep cold ocean may lead to a monument.
Also think about your build. The dark water hides the seabed, so underwater bases feel moody and private. Kelp grows tall here, which gives you plenty of material to farm. Finally, the gravel floor is useful for concrete powder and for flint to craft arrows. Shovel some up before you start building.
Cold ocean version history
The cold ocean was added in Java 1.13 during the Update Aquatic. Ocean ruins and shipwrecks arrived in the same update. The nautilus later joined the spawn list.
