Dripstone caves are underground biomes full of stalactites and stalagmites made from pointed dripstone. They also hold large blobs of copper ore. This dripstone caves finder reads your seed and shows the nearest areas on the map above, using the cave biome layer. It helps you dig straight down into the right spot instead of exploring blindly.
Where dripstone caves generate
Dripstone caves form deep inland, where the land is far from the ocean. They almost never appear under oceans or along coasts.
They are especially common below mountains. Under tall peaks, they usually sit above the deep dark. However, they are rarer under humid biomes such as dark forests and taigas. In those places, lush caves tend to take over instead.
What you find in dripstone caves
The walls are lined with dripstone blocks. Pointed dripstone hangs from the ceiling and rises from the floor. Large dripstone columns can fill whole caverns.
- Ores: copper ore forms bigger blobs here than in other biomes.
- Water: small pools only a few blocks wide, with waterlogged dripstone.
- Mobs: drowned spawn here much more often than elsewhere, along with the usual cave monsters.
- Other features: amethyst geodes, lava lakes and monster rooms.
Large caverns here can be very tall. Thick dripstone columns connect floor and ceiling, while smaller spikes cluster around them. Because of that, the biome is one of the most striking places underground, and many players build cave bases among the pillars.
How to find dripstone caves with this map
In game, explore large caves under mountains. Pointed dripstone poking out of a cave mouth or ravine is a good sign.
The map is far more direct. Enter your seed and choose Java or Bedrock. Because dripstone caves are underground, this page reads biomes at cave height. The map flies to the nearest patch and marks it with a biome icon. Then use the list on the left to compare other patches, and click one to view it.
To get there, teleport to the coordinates at the surface and dig down carefully. Or use spectator mode to scout the cave first.
Tips for dripstone caves
Watch your step. Landing on a stalagmite deals extra fall damage. Falling stalactites can also hurt you, so do not mine below them carelessly.
Dripstone is useful, too. Place pointed dripstone under a block that has water or lava above it, and it slowly drips into a cauldron below. That gives you an endless lava farm. Bring plenty of torches, since drowned and zombies spawn often in these dark caves.
Mining copper in dripstone caves
Copper is one of the main reasons to visit. Since copper ore blobs are larger here, a single vein can give you a stack of raw copper quickly. Use a Fortune pickaxe for even more.
Copper has many uses. You can craft lightning rods, spyglasses, brushes and copper blocks. Copper blocks slowly oxidize to green over time, and you can wax them with honeycomb to stop it.
Iron and other ores still appear in the walls as usual. Therefore, a dripstone cave makes a good all-round mining area. Light up the main cavern first, then branch out. Pointed dripstone can also block narrow passages, so mine it away as you go.
Dripstone caves version history
Dripstone caves were added in Java 1.17, but only in custom worlds at first. They began generating naturally in 1.18, the Caves & Cliffs Part II update. Larger copper ore blobs came during 1.18 development.
Dripstone Caves FAQ
How deep are dripstone caves?
They generate underground at varying depths, often in large caverns below mountains. The finder shows where they are on the cave layer.
Why do drowned spawn in dripstone caves?
Drowned have a high spawn weight in this biome, similar to zombies. Expect them in and around the cave water.
Are dripstone caves good for copper?
Yes. Copper ore forms larger blobs here than anywhere else.
Can I see dripstone caves on a surface map?
Not on a normal surface view. This page switches the map to cave height so the underground biome shows up.
How do I farm lava with dripstone?
Put pointed dripstone under a block with lava on top, and place a cauldron below. The cauldron slowly fills with lava.
