Groves are snowy spruce forests on the lower slopes of mountains. Snow covers everything, and hidden powder snow can trap careless players. This grove biome finder uses your seed to show the nearest groves on the map above. It is handy when you want snow foxes, white wolves or a quiet winter base.
Where groves generate
Groves form on mountain slopes in cold to temperate climates with medium to high humidity. In high mountains they often border jagged peaks and frozen peaks.
As the land drops, groves meet forests, taigas, meadows, birch forests, dark forests and old growth taigas. In very cold regions, they can spread into flat valleys.
Drier slopes turn into snowy slopes instead. The deep dark is common far below, with dripstone and lush caves closer to the surface. Groves are a common mountain biome.
What you find in a grove
Spruce and pine trees stand in deep snow. The ground is snow, snow blocks and powder snow, with dirt below.
- Powder snow: you sink into it and slowly freeze. Leather boots let you walk on top.
- Mobs: snow foxes, the snowy wolf variant and rabbits are the only passive mobs.
- Ores: emerald ore and infested stone generate in the stone below.
- Structure: pillager outposts can appear here.
Groves have no villages. If you need villagers, check nearby taigas or meadows.

Survival tips for the grove
Wear leather boots before you explore. Powder snow looks just like normal snow, and falling into a deep pocket can freeze you.
Collect powder snow with a bucket. You can use it as a trap around your base or to make a safe landing spot.
Snow foxes sleep during the day and often carry items in their mouths. Snowy wolves are worth taming for their white look. Bring bones and approach a pack carefully.
Grove vs snowy slopes
Both biomes sit on cold mountain sides, so they are easy to mix up. The main difference is trees. Groves have spruce and pine forests, while snowy slopes are bare.
Humidity decides which one you get. Wetter slopes become groves, and drier slopes become snowy slopes. Because of that, the two often sit next to each other.
Mobs differ as well. Groves spawn foxes, wolves and rabbits. Snowy slopes spawn goats and rabbits, and they can also have igloos. If you want wood and wolves, pick a grove. For goat horns and igloos, head to the slopes instead.
Groves are also a reliable source of spruce wood in snowy mountains. Spruce logs are dark and sturdy-looking, which suits cabins and lodges. Collect some saplings too. Spruce saplings can grow into large 2×2 trees when you plant four together.
Grove version history
Groves came with Java 1.18. Powder snow strips became exposed at the surface late in its development. In 1.20.5, rabbits, wolves and foxes became the only passive mobs that spawn here, and the snowy wolf variant was added.
