Mushroom fields are rare islands covered in mycelium and giant mushrooms. They are famous for mooshrooms and for being almost free of hostile mobs. Because they hide far out in deep ocean, this mushroom island finder is a big help. Enter your seed, and the map above shows the nearest mushroom fields.
Where mushroom fields generate
Mushroom fields form only far from the mainland, at the lowest continentalness values. That means they always appear as islands in deep ocean. Since 1.18 they never connect to other land biomes.
Nearby deep-ocean spots are more likely to become mushroom fields too. As a result, islands often come in small clusters.
This is one of the rarest surface biomes. It covers only about 0.14% of the Overworld. Island size ranges from a few blocks to thousands of blocks across.
What you find on a mushroom island
Mycelium replaces grass as the ground cover. Red and brown mushrooms grow everywhere, along with huge mushrooms. Near the water you may spot sugar cane, short grass and firefly bushes.
- Mooshrooms: this is the only biome where they spawn naturally.
- No hostile spawns: monsters do not spawn naturally here, even in caves and mineshafts below.
- Exceptions: spawners, raids, phantoms and skeleton horse traps still work. Wandering traders also show up.
Watch out for lush caves under the island. They count as a separate biome, so monsters can spawn there.
How the mushroom island finder helps
Finding these islands by boat can take hours. Instead, enter your seed above. The map flies to the closest mushroom island and marks it with a biome icon. The list on the left shows other islands, often in the same cluster. Click one to read its coordinates.
In game, use /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields with cheats. Teleport with /tp @s X ~ Z. In survival, pack a boat, food and a compass for the ocean crossing.
Mushroom island tips for survival
This biome makes one of the safest bases in the game. With no hostile mob spawns on the surface, you can build without lighting every corner.
Mooshrooms are very useful. Milk one with a bowl for mushroom stew. Shear one to get mushrooms, but note that it turns into a normal cow. A red mooshroom struck by lightning turns brown, and brown ones can give suspicious stew.
Huge mushrooms are an easy source of mushroom blocks. Mycelium also lets you grow mushrooms in daylight.
Getting to a mushroom island
Reaching these islands usually means a long sea trip. Pack food, a boat and a few blocks for a rest stop on the way.
Write down the island coordinates from the map before you leave. At sea, F3 or the coordinates display keeps you on course.
Once there, build a small dock first. It gives you a safe way to come and go by boat.
After that, light up any caves you plan to use. Lush caves under the island can still spawn monsters. A bright, fenced-in pen keeps your mooshrooms safe from wandering zombies that come from below. With those basics in place, the island becomes a very peaceful home.
Mushroom fields version history
Mushroom islands were added in Java Beta 1.9 prerelease. They became much rarer in 1.7.2 and were renamed to mushroom fields in 1.13. Sugar cane and grass started generating in 1.17, and 1.18 made them true islands.
