Ocean

The ocean is the plain, temperate sea that covers huge parts of every Overworld map. It has a gravel floor, swaying kelp and seagrass, and plenty of squid and cod. This ocean biome finder reads your seed and marks the nearest ocean areas on the map above. Use it to plan a sea base, a boat route or a kelp farm before you even load the world.

Where oceans generate

Oceans form wherever the terrain sits well below sea level. In practice, that means large open areas between continents and coastlines. Regular oceans take the middle of the temperature range, so they are neither tropical nor icy.

As water gets warmer, the ocean turns into a lukewarm ocean. As it gets colder, it becomes a cold ocean. Further from land, the seafloor drops away and the biome changes into a deep ocean. Because of this, a plain ocean often sits as a band between the coast and the deep water.

What you find in the ocean

The seabed is mostly a single layer of gravel. Near shallow areas you also see patches of clay, dirt and sand. Kelp and seagrass cover much of the floor, which makes this biome a good spot for a kelp farm.

  • Water mobs: squid, cod, dolphins and the nautilus.
  • Hostile mobs: drowned rise from the water at night.
  • Structures: shipwrecks, cold ocean ruins and ruined portals.

Ocean monuments do not appear here, though. They only generate in the deep ocean variants.

How to find an ocean biome in your world

In game, oceans are hard to miss. Walk in a straight line from spawn and you usually reach a coast quickly. A boat then lets you scout the open water fast.

With this map, the search takes seconds. First, enter your seed and choose Java or Bedrock. Next, the map flies to the nearest ocean and marks it with a biome icon. The list on the left shows more ocean areas, sorted by distance. Click any entry to jump there.

Hover over the spot to read its coordinates. Then use /tp @s X 70 Z to land near the surface, or simply sail there.

Tips for using the ocean

Oceans are perfect for long boat trips, since boats are much faster than walking. Bring a few doors or a respiration helmet if you plan to explore underwater. Placing a door underwater gives you a pocket of air.

Shipwrecks are worth checking early. Their chests can hold treasure maps that lead to buried treasure on nearby beaches. Also, watch out for drowned carrying tridents. In current versions, some adult drowned with tridents ride a zombie nautilus.

Ocean biome finder vs. other ocean types

Minecraft has nine ocean biomes that generate naturally. The plain ocean is the middle ground between them. Warm and lukewarm oceans have sandy floors and tropical fish. Cold and frozen oceans have darker water, salmon and, in frozen seas, icebergs.

Each type also has a deep variant, except the warm ocean. Deep variants matter because only they can hold ocean monuments. So if the finder shows a regular ocean right next to darker water, check the list for a deep ocean nearby. That way, you can combine a shallow kelp farm with a monument trip.

Ocean version history

Oceans have been part of the game since its early days. The big change came with the Update Aquatic in Java 1.13. That update added kelp, seagrass, shipwrecks, ocean ruins and the warmer and colder ocean variants. Later, the Mounts of Mayhem drop added the nautilus to ocean waters.

Ocean FAQ

What is the most common ocean in Minecraft?

The regular ocean and its deep variant are among the most common biomes in the Overworld. They fill the temperate parts of the sea between colder and warmer water.

Do ocean monuments spawn in regular oceans?

No. Ocean monuments only generate in deep ocean variants. Look for the darker, deeper water further from shore.

What mobs spawn in the ocean?

Squid, cod, dolphins and the nautilus spawn in the water. Drowned are the main hostile mob, and glow squid appear in dark underwater caves below.

How do I find the closest ocean to my spawn?

Enter your seed in the finder above. The map jumps to the nearest ocean and lists more options on the left.

Is the ocean good for a kelp farm?

Yes. Kelp grows naturally across the gravel floor, so you can collect it right away and replant it in your farm.
