Old Growth Pine Taiga

The old growth pine taiga is a cool forest of giant 2×2 pine trees with leaves only near the top. Podzol, coarse dirt and mossy boulders cover the floor. Where old growth pine taigas generate

The biome forms at fairly low temperatures with very high humidity. It often appears where weirdness is positive. So it tends to sit beside regular taigas, dark forests and old growth spruce taigas.

Sometimes swamps or windswept forests border it too. Because of the high humidity, lush caves are very common underneath. The biome is uncommon, but patches can be large.

From above, the brown podzol shows through the thin pine tops. So the biome looks patchy compared with a regular taiga.

What you find in an old growth pine taiga

Most trees are tall pines with 2×2 trunks and sparse leaves at the top. Regular pines and spruces grow between them.

• Ground: podzol, coarse dirt and mossy cobblestone boulders.
• Plants: ferns, large ferns, sweet berry bushes, dead bushes and plenty of mushrooms.
• Animals: black wolves, foxes, rabbits, sheep and cold pigs, cows and chickens.
• Structures: trail ruins and abandoned camps.

Zombie villagers spawn here more often than in any other biome. However, villages and pillager outposts never generate.

How to find an old growth pine taiga

Enter your seed and pick Java or Bedrock. The map zooms to the nearest old growth pine taiga and marks it with a biome icon. In the list on the left you can browse more, sorted by distance. A click on any result moves the map there.

In game, F3 shows minecraft:old_growth_pine_taiga. Look for very tall bare trunks and brown podzol ground. With cheats, teleport using /tp @s X 120 Z.

Survival tips for the pine taiga

The 2×2 trees give huge amounts of spruce wood. Also, you can plant four spruce saplings in a square to grow your own giant trees. So the biome is excellent for a wood farm.

Podzol is useful, because mushrooms grow on it in any light. Collect it with Silk Touch. Mossy cobblestone from the boulders also saves you a trip to a dungeon.

Black wolves are a rare variant, so tame one if you like collecting. Foxes steal items, but you can breed them with sweet berries. However, the high zombie villager rate is a hazard at night. On the upside, you can cure them into villagers.

Wolves, foxes and rabbits in the pine taiga

This biome is one of the best for animals. Black wolves spawn in packs of four. Tame them with bones, and they will fight beside you. Each wolf variant has its own look, so black wolves are a nice addition to a collection.

Foxes are trickier. They run from players and pick up items they find. However, two foxes bred with sweet berries give you a baby that trusts you. Lead the baby home with a lead.

Rabbits give rabbit meat and hide. Also, their feet can drop as a rare item for potions of leaping.

Remember that wolves attack foxes and rabbits, and foxes hunt chickens and rabbits. So keep pets apart if you build an animal farm.

Old growth pine taiga version history

Java 1.7.2 added it as mega taiga. In 1.13 it became giant tree taiga. Java 1.15 let foxes and sweet berry bushes appear here. Snapshot 21w40a renamed it to old growth pine taiga. Java 1.20 added trail ruins, and Java 1.20.5 made its wolves the black variant. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
