Sparse Jungle

A sparse jungle is a lighter, more open version of the jungle. It has scattered jungle trees, bushes and oaks with plenty of grass between them. Use this sparse jungle finder to see where these biomes sit in your world. The map above reads your seed and points you to the nearest patches right away.

Where sparse jungles generate

Sparse jungles form in fairly warm and humid regions. They have the same jungle feel, but the trees are spread out. This makes them easier to cross than a full jungle.

They commonly border bamboo jungles, plains, old growth birch forests and deserts. You also find them next to wooded badlands, mangrove swamps and windswept savannas. A river usually separates a sparse jungle from a regular jungle, though they can touch directly.

Near the coast, sparse jungles may reach a beach or a lukewarm ocean. Inland, they often climb into forests and then stony peaks. Lush caves are frequent below.

What grows and lives in a sparse jungle

You get small jungle trees, jungle bushes and oak trees. All of them grow far less often than in a normal jungle. Melons, vines, ferns, dandelions and poppies are here too. Bamboo does not generate.

  • Wolves: the rusty wolf variant spawns here.
  • Farm animals: sheep plus warm pigs, warm cows and warm chickens.
  • No parrots or ocelots: those stay in the denser jungles.
  • Structures: abandoned camps can generate here in Java 26.3. Jungle temples do not.

Because of the open layout, this biome is a good spot for early food. Animals are easy to see and herd.

Find one fast with the sparse jungle finder

Type your seed into the box at the top. The map zooms to the closest sparse jungle and marks it with a biome icon. More results appear in the list on the left. Pick one and the map moves to it, with coordinates ready to copy.

In game, the command is /locate biome minecraft:sparse_jungle. To get there fast with cheats, type /tp @s X ~ Z using the numbers from the map. Survival players can follow the F3 coordinates instead.

Tips for using a sparse jungle

Want a rusty wolf? This is the biome to search. Bring bones and tame one as soon as you see a pack.

The open space also makes this a calm base location. You can still reach the jungle wood and melons you need. At the same time, you avoid the dense leaves that hide mobs at night.

If you want parrots, ocelots or a temple, use the map to check for a full jungle or bamboo jungle nearby. They are often just across a river.

Sparse jungle or full jungle: which suits you?

Both biomes give you jungle wood and melons. The difference is in the details. A full jungle has parrots, ocelots, pandas and jungle temples. A sparse jungle trades those for open space and rusty wolves.

So choose by goal. For a quick base with easy sightlines, the sparse version wins. Mobs are easier to spot, and you can build without clearing a dense canopy first.

For loot and rare animals, head into the thick jungle instead. Luckily, the two often sit side by side. Check the map list for both and compare the distances before you set off.

Sparse jungle version history

This biome was added in Java 1.7.2 as the jungle edge. It was renamed to sparse jungle in 1.18, when it also became a full biome instead of a thin border strip.

Rusty wolves arrived in 1.20.5. Warm farm animal variants spawn here since 1.21.5. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
