Stony Peaks

Stony peaks are bare rocky mountains with streaks of white calcite. Unlike most peaks, they are warm enough to stay free of snow. This stony peaks finder reads your seed and shows the closest ones on the map above. Head there for emeralds, calcite and wide views over jungles and savannas.

Where stony peaks generate

Stony peaks rise at the highest points of the landscape. They form where erosion is low and temperatures are moderately high. You can find a single large peak, small hilltops, a ring around a valley or a long range.

Forests and savanna plateaus usually surround them. Lower down they meet jungles, savannas or plains. Cooler areas turn into frozen or jagged peaks, while hotter areas can touch any badlands variant.

Now and then, stony peaks form cliffs along the coast. The deep dark is very common underneath.

What you find on stony peaks

The surface is bare stone with no soil on top. Strips of calcite cut through it, and these strips are unique to this biome. Gravel replaces some of the stone.

  • Ores: emerald ore generates here.
  • Stone types: andesite and granite appear in Java Edition.
  • Infested stone: silverfish hide in some blocks.
  • Mobs: no passive mobs spawn. Only hostile mobs appear in the dark.
  • Structure: pillager outposts.

How to use the stony peaks finder

Enter your seed above. The map pans to the closest stony peaks and marks them with a biome icon. Check the list on the left for more ranges, and click one to read its coordinates.

In game, run /locate biome minecraft:stony_peaks with cheats. Teleport with a safe height, such as /tp @s X 200 Z, and then drop down carefully.

Before you go, check the neighbouring biomes on the map. A forest or savanna at the base gives you wood and food for the climb, while the peak itself has neither.

Tips for stony peaks

Calcite is a nice white building block. You can mine it with any pickaxe, and the strips here are easy to collect.

Since snow does not cover the rock, ores are easier to see. Look for emerald ore on the steep faces.

There is no wood on the peak itself. Bring logs or gather them from the forests at the base before you climb.

Stony peaks vs other peak biomes

Minecraft has three main peak biomes, and each one feels different.

  • Stony peaks: warm, bare stone with calcite strips. No snow cover and no passive mobs.
  • Jagged peaks: cold and sharp, covered in snow, with goats.
  • Frozen peaks: cold, with ice and packed ice glaciers, and goats.

Temperature decides which one forms. Stony peaks appear in warmer regions, which is why jungles, savannas and badlands often sit below them.

All three can host pillager outposts. They also share emerald ore and the deep dark below. So if you want emeralds without snow or ice, stony peaks are the most comfortable choice.

Stony peaks also show up along some coastlines as tall shore cliffs. These spots are rare but very dramatic. A lighthouse or castle on one of them looks great from the sea. Use the map list to look for stony peaks that sit right next to the ocean.

Stony peaks version history

Stony peaks were added in Java 1.18. Early snapshots had strips of andesite, calcite and granite. Later, only the calcite strips stayed, along with gravel.
