The taiga is a cool forest of spruce and pine trees, with ferns and sweet berry bushes underneath. It has foxes, wolves and taiga villages built from spruce. It is a good all-round place to settle. This taiga biome finder points you to the closest one in your seed. The map above flies to the nearest taiga and marks it with a biome icon.
Where taigas generate
Taigas grow in cold but humid climates. Snow does not fall at normal heights, which keeps them green. If it gets colder, snowy taiga takes over.
Typical neighbours are forests, birch forests, old growth taigas and snowy taigas. Because of the humidity, lush caves are common below. Dripstone caves can also appear inland. Taigas are common, so most seeds have several within reach.
Inside a taiga, the terrain ranges from flat valleys to rolling hills. Rivers often cross it, and lakes are common. At high altitudes, some taiga areas can still get snow. In general, though, a taiga stays green all year.
What you find in a taiga
Spruce and pine are the only trees here. Ferns and large ferns cover the ground, and sweet berry bushes are common.
- Animals: foxes, pale wolves, rabbits, sheep and cold pigs, cows and chickens.
- Plants: ferns, sweet berry bushes, pumpkins, mushrooms, sugar cane and firefly bushes near water.
- Structures: taiga villages, pillager outposts, trail ruins and abandoned camps.
Taiga villages often have pumpkin farms and poppy gardens.

Survival tips for the taiga biome
The taiga is a balanced start. You get spruce wood, sweet berries for food and plenty of animals. Also, a taiga village gives beds, crops and trades.
Foxes sleep during the day and hunt at night. They pick up items, so keep valuables in chests. To tame one, breed two adults with sweet berries. The baby will trust you.
Pale wolves are the taiga wolf variant, and you can tame them with bones. However, sweet berry bushes scratch you if you walk through them, so path around them. Trail ruins are worth digging up for sherds and armour trims.
Taiga villages and trail ruins
Taiga villages use spruce logs, spruce planks and cobblestone. Many have pumpkin patches and sweet berry bushes nearby. They work like any other village, so you can trade, sleep and breed villagers.
Pillager outposts can also generate in taigas. Watch for their dark oak towers before you build. Patrols may leave the outpost and roam nearby.
Trail ruins are a hidden bonus. They sit partly underground, often with only a few blocks showing. Brush the suspicious gravel to find pottery sherds and rare armour trims.
Because taigas have villages, outposts and ruins, they offer a lot to explore. In addition, abandoned camps since Java 26.3 add another small point of interest.
Taiga version history
Taigas have been in the game since Alpha. Beta 1.4 added wolves. Java 1.14 added foxes, sweet berry bushes, taiga villages and pillager outposts. Java 1.20 added trail ruins. Java 1.20.5 made taiga wolves the pale variant, and Java 1.21.5 switched farm animals to cold variants. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
