The warm ocean is Minecraft's tropical sea. Bright turquoise water sits over a sandy floor, and colorful coral reefs fill the shallows. This warm ocean finder searches your seed and marks the closest warm water with a biome icon on the map above. It is the quickest way to find coral, sea pickles and tropical fish without sailing for hours.
Where warm oceans generate
Warm oceans appear in the hottest climate zones. Look for them near deserts, badlands, windswept savannas and mangrove swamps. Because those biomes are fairly uncommon, warm oceans are less common than other seas.
As the water cools, a warm ocean fades into a lukewarm ocean. It can also border mushroom fields. Unlike most oceans, there is no separate deep warm ocean in normal world generation.
What you find in the warm ocean
The floor is sand over stone. On top of it, coral reefs grow in many shapes and colors. Reefs can make the water look shallower than it really is.
- Blocks: coral blocks, coral, coral fans, sea pickles and warm seagrass.
- Fish: tropical fish and pufferfish. Cod and salmon never spawn here.
- Other mobs: squid, dolphins, the nautilus and drowned.
- Structures: shipwrecks and warm sandstone ocean ruins.
Kelp does not grow naturally in warm oceans, so collect it elsewhere.
Warm oceans also have small islands now and then. Some carry grass and normal plants, while others look like sandy beaches with sandstone. Those islands make nice spots for a tropical starter base, right next to the reef.
How to find a warm ocean in your world
In game, head toward a desert or badlands coast. The water there turns a brighter, lighter blue. From a boat, you can often spot reefs below the surface.
On this map, just enter your seed and pick Java or Bedrock. The view zooms to the nearest warm ocean and marks it with a biome icons shape. The list on the left offers more warm seas to compare. Click one, and the map moves there instantly.
Then grab the coordinates and teleport with /tp @s X 70 Z. A short swim later, you are on the reef.
Warm ocean tips
Bring a Silk Touch pickaxe. Coral blocks and coral only keep their color with Silk Touch, and they die when placed out of water. So build your reef display underwater or keep it waterlogged.
Sea pickles glow when placed in water in groups. They make great underwater lighting. Also, avoid pufferfish when you swim. Getting too close inflates them and poisons you.
Coral reef types to look for
Coral in Minecraft comes in five types: tube, brain, bubble, fire and horn. Each type has a coral block, a coral plant and a coral fan. Together, they give reefs their mix of blue, pink, purple, red and yellow.
Reefs grow in three basic forms. Some rise as tree-like branches, others as rounded mushroom shapes, and others as low, claw-like clusters. Sea pickles often sit on top of the coral, glowing softly.
Coral needs water to stay alive. If you place a coral block or fan without touching water, it soon turns into dead coral. Dead coral is gray, but it still makes a nice stone-like building block. So if you want living colors, keep every piece waterlogged or touching water.
Warm ocean version history
Warm oceans arrived with the Update Aquatic in Java 1.13. That update gave them coral reefs, sea pickles, shipwrecks and ocean ruins. Drowned could not spawn in warm oceans at first; that changed in a 1.18 snapshot.
