Java Edition 1.16, the Nether Update, was released on June 23, 2020, and 1.16.1 followed a day later. Both use the same generator. This Minecraft 1.16.1 seed map shows the reworked Nether, ruined portals and every Overworld structure. Enter your seed to find bastions, fortresses and ancient debris zones in their original 1.16.1 spots.
The Nether Update Rebuilt the Nether
Before 1.16, the Nether was one biome. The Nether Update added four new ones, and the old biome became nether wastes:
- Crimson forests, with crimson fungi and roots
- Warped forests, with warped fungi, roots and nether sprouts
- Soul sand valleys, full of soul sand, soul soil and basalt
- Basalt deltas, rough terrain made of basalt and blackstone
New structures came too. Bastion remnants are huge blackstone fortresses full of piglins, gold and loot. Ruined portals appear in both the Overworld and the Nether, often with a chest of gold gear.
Ancient Debris and Fortress Changes
Ancient debris generates throughout the Nether, but it is most common between Y 8 and Y 22. It always spawns touching lava or blocks on every side, so you cannot spot it from open air. Instead, strip mine or use beds to blast tunnels.
Fortresses also changed. They can now generate in soul sand valleys and basalt deltas, and they spread evenly across the Nether. Each Nether region holds either a fortress or a bastion, never both.
Why 1.16.1 and 1.16.2 Differ
Here is the catch. Version 1.16.2 changed the placement rules for fortresses and bastions. So the same seed puts them in different places in 1.16.1 and 1.16.2. If you play 1.16 or 1.16.1, stick with this map.
Against 1.15.2, the Overworld stays almost the same, apart from new ruined portals. The Nether, however, is completely different, since its biomes are new.
Many speedrunners still play 1.16.1. If that is you, this map helps you plan routes with the correct bastion and fortress positions.
Checking Your Version and Using the Minecraft 1.16.1 Seed Map
Check the bottom-left corner of the title screen, or your launcher profile under Installations. Both 1.16 and 1.16.1 fit this page.
- Find a ruined portal near spawn. It is often the fastest way into the Nether.
- Switch to the Nether view and mark the closest bastion and fortress.
- Pick a bastion type if you know the layouts. Some are much safer than others.
- Use crimson forests for food. Hoglins spawn there.
Ruined Portals and Your First Nether Trip
Ruined portals are a shortcut into the Nether. Each one is a broken obsidian frame, often surrounded by netherrack and magma. Some sit on the surface, others are buried, underwater or high in the air.
Most portals are missing a few obsidian blocks. Some also contain crying obsidian, which cannot be used in a portal frame. However, the nearby chest often holds flint and steel, obsidian or gold gear. With a bucket of water and lava, you can fill the gaps.
Use the map to find the closest one, and you can reach the Nether in minutes.
