Snowy Slopes

Snowy slopes are steep, treeless mountain sides covered in snow and powder snow. Goats leap across the cliffs, and igloos sometimes hide on the hills. Where snowy slopes generate

Snowy slopes form on mountain sides in cold to temperate areas with low humidity. Higher up, they usually turn into jagged or frozen peaks. Groves, cherry groves and meadows are common neighbours.

In very cold regions, snowy slopes can spill into valleys. Some of these areas cover thousands of blocks.

Deep underground, the deep dark is common. Dripstone caves sit higher up. Overall, snowy slopes are a common mountain biome.

What you find on snowy slopes

There are no trees here. The ground is snow, snow blocks and powder snow. Steep north- and east-facing sides show bare stone.

• Goats: they jump high and ram players and mobs.
• Rabbits: they also spawn here.
• Ores: emerald ore and infested stone, like other mountain biomes.
• Structures: pillager outposts and igloos. This is the only mountain biome where igloos generate.

With cheats, use /locate biome minecraft:snowy_slopes and then /tp @s X ~ Z. In survival, use your coordinates and bring leather boots.

Tip: zoom out on the map first. Snowy slopes often cover whole mountain sides, so a wider view helps you pick the area with the gentlest climb.

Tips for snowy slopes

Goats are the main reason to visit. When a goat rams a solid block, it can drop a goat horn. You can also milk goats with a bucket.

Be careful near cliffs. A goat ram can push you off a ledge. Powder snow pockets are another danger, so wear leather boots.

Igloos are worth checking. Some have a hidden basement under a trapdoor, with a brewing stand and a chest. The basement also holds a villager and a zombie villager.

Staying safe in powder snow

Powder snow is the biggest hazard on snowy slopes. It looks almost like normal snow. When you step on it without leather boots, you sink in and start to freeze.

Wearing any piece of leather armor protects you from freezing damage. Leather boots also let you walk on top of powder snow. If you do get stuck, climb out quickly or break the blocks around you.

There is an upside, too. Landing in powder snow stops fall damage. You can also scoop it up with a bucket and place it as a trap or a safe landing pad at your base.

Powder snow also works well in builds. Lay a pit of it at the foot of a drop tower or a long staircase. You can jump in safely, and mobs that wander in will sink and slow down. Keep a pair of leather boots on so you can walk across it yourself.

Snowy slopes version history

Snowy slopes were added in Java 1.18. During its snapshots they gained emerald ore, infested stone, goats and pillager outposts. Exposed stone on steep slopes and surface powder snow came later in the same cycle.
