Seed map › Ores Finder › Coal Finder
Coal fuels your furnaces and lights your first torches. This Minecraft coal ore finder predicts where coal ore generates from your seed. Enter a seed and the map marks predicted veins near spawn. Click one to copy coordinates or a /tp command. Then mine a few veins and you are set for the early game.
Best Y Level for Coal
Coal ore generates from Y 0 to Y 320. It does not appear in the deepslate layer below Y 0.
There are two batches. The first peaks at Y 96 and spreads from Y 0 to 192. The second spreads evenly from Y 136 to 320, so mountains are packed with coal.
In practice, coal sits in hillsides, cliffs and mountain faces. Exposed coal on a mountain is often the fastest way to collect it.
If you spawn near mountains, start there. Exposed coal on a slope takes only a few minutes to collect. In flat areas, look in shallow caves, ravines and hillsides instead. Coal is so common that you rarely need to dig deep for it. A quick walk around spawn often turns up enough for your first set of torches.
How Coal Generates
Coal blobs are large compared to most ores. A single vein can give you dozens of coal.
The lower batch follows an air exposure rule. Half of the coal blocks that would touch air get skipped. The upper batch in the mountains does not, so coal on mountain cliffs is easy to spot.
Coal also works with any pickaxe, even a wooden one. That makes it the first ore most players mine.
Using the Coal Ore Finder Map
Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows predicted coal veins near spawn, sorted by distance.
Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. You land on the surface above the vein. Next, dig or climb to the listed Y level and mine around the point.
Fortune increases how much coal you get. Smelt logs into charcoal if you ever run low, since it works the same as fuel.
Limits of Coal Predictions
Caves and aquifers can carve through a vein after it forms. The air rule also skips some blocks in the lower batch. So the finder shows where coal starts, not an exact block count.
Coal is common, though. In most worlds, you find plenty on the way to any marker.
Uses for Coal
Coal is the most common fuel in the game. One piece smelts eight items in a furnace. A block of coal smelts 80 items, so it saves inventory space.
It has other uses too:
- Torches: one coal and one stick make four torches.
- Campfires: they use coal or charcoal as an ingredient.
- Fire charges: craft them with blaze powder and gunpowder.
- Trading: some villagers buy coal for emeralds.
Charcoal works as a replacement for most of these. Smelt logs to get it. However, charcoal cannot be crafted into a block of coal.
Coal ore also gives a little XP when you mine it. That makes an early coal run doubly useful.
Later, you may switch to lava buckets or kelp blocks for fuel. Until then, a few coal veins near spawn keep your furnaces running and your base lit.
