Diamond Finder

Diamonds are deep, rare and easy to miss by a single block. This Minecraft diamond finder predicts where diamond ore generates from your seed. Enter a seed and the map marks predicted veins near spawn. Click one to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. Then dig down and mine straight into the vein.

Best Y Level for Diamonds

In Java 1.18 and later, diamond ore generates from Y 16 down to the bottom of the world. It gets more common the deeper you go. Deepslate diamond ore is most common around Y -58 and -59, just above the bedrock layers.

So the classic plan is a tunnel at Y -58 or -59. You stay above the bumpy bedrock and below most lava lakes. However, lava pools are common at these depths, so carry a water bucket and blocks.

Pick a level and stay there for the whole tunnel. Jumping between heights wastes time and leaves gaps in what you see. Also remember that the bottom layers of the world are bedrock, which you cannot break. Y -58 or -59 keeps your tunnel clear of it while staying close to the bottom where diamonds are richest.

How Diamond Ore Generates

Diamonds come in several batches per chunk. Most spread between Y 16 and Y -63, with sizes from a single block up to small clusters. A rare batch, about once every nine chunks, can place a much larger blob.

Air exposure is the key rule. Diamond blocks that would touch air are often skipped. One batch never generates touching air at all. That is why caves show so few diamonds, while solid deepslate hides many more.

Water and lava do not count as air. As a result, you often see diamonds on the walls of underground lakes and aquifers. Java 1.20.2 also raised the amount of diamond ore in the deepslate layer.

Using the Diamond Finder Map

Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows predicted diamond veins near spawn, sorted by distance.

  1. Click a vein to copy its coordinates or a /tp command.
  2. The /tp command puts you on the surface above it.
  3. Dig down in a staircase to the listed Y level.
  4. Mine a few blocks around the point to find the full vein.

Use an iron pickaxe or better. A Fortune III pickaxe gives you about 2.2 diamonds per ore on average, so save your best vein for it.

Limits of Diamond Predictions

The finder repeats the game's ore placement for each chunk. That gives a strong prediction, but not a guarantee. Caves, ravines and aquifers carve through the rock after ore is placed. A vein can be partly or fully removed.

Also, the air exposure rule depends on what ends up next to each block. The map cannot always know that in advance. So treat each marker as a place to dig and check, and look around nearby blocks too.

Mining Strategies for Diamonds

Even with a map, it helps to know a few mining methods. Use them to reach a vein or to collect extra diamonds along the way.

  • Branch mining: dig a main tunnel at Y -58, then side tunnels two blocks apart. You see every block between them.
  • Cave exploring: fast and fun, but caves show fewer diamonds because of the air rule.
  • Lake walls: check the edges of underground water and lava lakes. Diamonds often sit right against them.

Deepslate is slow to mine. An Efficiency enchantment or a Haste beacon helps a lot. Bring plenty of torches and food, since trips at this depth take time.

Lava is the main hazard. Never dig straight down, and keep a water bucket ready. Fire resistance potions help if you plan a long session.

FAQ

What is the best Y level for diamonds?

Around Y -58 to -59 in Java 1.18 and later. Diamonds generate from Y 16 down to the bottom of the world.

Why are there so few diamonds in caves?

Diamond ore that would touch air is often skipped during generation. Solid deepslate hides more of it.

Which pickaxe do I need for diamonds?

An iron pickaxe or better. Stone or wood will break the ore without dropping anything.

Does Fortune work on diamond ore?

Yes. Fortune III gives about 2.2 diamonds per ore on average.

Why did I not find diamonds at the marker?

A cave, aquifer or air exposure may have removed some of the vein. Check the blocks around the marker.
