Seed map › Ores Finder › Iron Finder
Iron is the metal you need most, from tools and armor to hoppers and rails. This Minecraft iron ore finder predicts where iron ore generates from your seed. Enter a seed and the map marks predicted veins near spawn. Click one for coordinates or a /tp command. Then decide whether to mine high in the mountains or deep underground.
Best Y Levels for Iron
Iron ore has two strong peaks in Java 1.18 and later:
- Y 16: a batch from Y -24 to 56, most common at 16.
- Y 232: a large batch from Y 80 upward, most common at 232.
A third, smaller batch spreads evenly from Y -64 to 72 with small blobs. Overall, iron ranges from the bottom of the world to the top of the tallest mountains.
So you have a choice. Underground, Y 16 is reliable everywhere. In big mountains, the upper batch gives you large exposed veins on the peaks.
Each level has trade-offs. Mining at Y 16 is safe and steady, with stone that breaks quickly. Mining high in mountains gives bigger veins, but you face steep drops, powder snow and long climbs. Whichever you choose, carry a stack of blocks. They help you cross gaps and build safe paths along cliffs.
Large Iron Veins
Besides normal blobs, the deepslate layer can hold large iron ore veins. These are long, winding bands mixed with tuff. They also contain blocks of raw iron, each worth nine raw iron.
Veins are rare, but one can supply you for a long time. If you see a streak of tuff in deepslate, follow it.
Using the Iron Ore Finder Map
Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows predicted iron veins near spawn, sorted by distance.
Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. You land on the surface above the vein. Next, dig down or climb up to the listed Y level and mine around the point.
A stone pickaxe or better works. Iron ore drops raw iron, which you smelt into ingots. Fortune increases the drop.
Limits of Iron Predictions
The finder follows the game's ore placement for each chunk. Caves and aquifers can still carve away part of a vein after it forms. Mountain terrain also matters for the upper batch. Ore only appears where there is stone to replace.
Treat each marker as a place to start digging. Check nearby blocks as well.
Mining vs Farming Iron
Early on, mining is the only way to get iron. A stone pickaxe and a few veins give you a full set of tools and armor.
Later, many players build an iron farm. It uses villagers to spawn iron golems, which drop iron ingots. A good farm can produce a large amount every hour.
Even with a farm, mining iron stays useful. The upper batch in mountains is huge, and large veins in deepslate hold blocks of raw iron.
Iron is used in many items:
- Tools, armor and shields.
- Buckets, shears and flint and steel.
- Hoppers, rails and minecarts.
- Anvils, which need a lot of it.
- Iron golems, built from four iron blocks and a carved pumpkin.
So plan your mining trips around what you need. A quick mountain trip usually supplies a whole base project.
FAQ
What is the best Y level for iron?
Y 16 underground, or Y 232 in tall mountains. Both are peaks of separate iron batches.
What pickaxe do I need for iron ore?
A stone pickaxe or better.
What are large iron veins?
Long bands of iron ore and tuff in the deepslate layer, with blocks of raw iron mixed in.
Why is there so much iron in mountains?
A large iron batch peaks at Y 232, so tall mountains are full of it.
