How to Find Ancient Debris and Mine Netherite Efficiently
Ancient debris is the rarest ore in Minecraft and the only source of netherite. It generates only in the Nether, it never sits exposed to air, and it takes a diamond or netherite pickaxe to mine. Finding it is mostly about mining at the right height with the right method.
This guide covers the best Y level for netherite, the fastest mining techniques, how to stay safe in the Nether, and what to do with the debris once you have it. It applies to Java 1.16+ and Bedrock 1.16+.

Best Y level for ancient debris
Ancient debris generates between Y 8 and Y 119 in the Nether. It uses two placements. One spreads small veins evenly across Y 8 to Y 119. The other adds extra veins in a band from about Y 8 to Y 24, most often near Y 16. Together, that makes the lower Nether the best place to look.
Most players mine at Y 15. At this height you are inside the densest band, and you are below the Nether lava sea, which sits at Y 31. That means fewer lava floods while you dig. Y 13 to Y 17 all work well.
| Y range | Debris chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Y 8 to 22 | Highest | Best band. Mine at Y 15. |
| Y 23 to 119 | Low | Only the evenly spread veins. |
| Below Y 8 | None | Close to the bedrock floor. |

Why you will not find it in the open
Ancient debris almost never generates touching air. That means you will not spot it on cave walls or the edge of lava lakes the way you spot iron or coal in the Overworld. You have to dig into solid netherrack to reveal it.
Veins are tiny, usually one to three blocks. A good haul is a handful of debris per hour of mining, not a stack. Plan for several trips if you want a full set of netherite armor and tools, which needs nine ingots, or 36 debris in total.
Ancient debris is also immune to fire and lava. Dropped items and netherite gear float on lava instead of burning, so losing one to a lava pool is less of a disaster.
Mining methods: branch, bed and TNT
Ancient debris has a blast resistance of 1,200, the same as obsidian. Netherrack breaks easily. Explosions clear huge amounts of netherrack and leave debris behind, which is why explosive mining is so popular.
- Branch mining: Dig a 1x2 main tunnel at Y 15 and side tunnels every three blocks. Safe and cheap, but slow.
- Bed mining: Beds explode when you try to sleep in the Nether. Dig a tunnel, place a bed at the end, put a block between you and the bed, and click it. Wool is easy to farm, so this scales well. Always stand back and wear armor with Blast Protection if you can.
- TNT mining: Place TNT in a line every few blocks along the wall of your tunnel and light them. Good if you have a creeper or gunpowder farm.
Use an Efficiency V pickaxe for the netherrack. Debris itself mines slowly even with a diamond pickaxe, so be patient.
Staying safe in the Nether
Mining at Y 15 is safer than higher up, but the Nether still has risks.
- Lava pockets: Hidden lava can flow in when you break a block. Carry blocks to plug it and a stack of cobblestone or netherrack.
- Fire Resistance potions: Brew a few with magma cream. They turn a lava accident into a minor issue.
- Gold armor piece: Wear at least one gold item so piglins stay neutral.
- Ghasts: Low tunnels hide you from ghasts, another reason to stay at Y 15.
- Water does not work: Water evaporates in the Nether, so you cannot use a water bucket to stop a fall or put out fire.
Build your Nether portal near your mining area. Use the nether portal calculator to link it to a base in the Overworld.
Using a seed map to plan your trip
Ancient debris positions come from the world seed, so a seed map can give you a head start. Enter your seed and Java version in the ancient debris finder to see where debris is predicted around your Nether coordinates, with a list of the nearest veins. Treat the results as a guide rather than a promise, since terrain carving can change the exact blocks.
The map also helps you pick a good area. Bastions are worth visiting on the same trip, because their chests are the main source of the netherite upgrade smithing template. Use the bastion finder to find the nearest one, then mine at Y 15 nearby.
Turning debris into netherite
- Smelt ancient debris in a furnace or blast furnace to get netherite scrap.
- Craft 4 netherite scrap and 4 gold ingots into one netherite ingot.
- At a smithing table, combine a diamond item, a netherite ingot and a netherite upgrade smithing template.
The template is found in bastion remnant chests. It is guaranteed in the treasure room chest. You can copy a template with 7 diamonds, 1 netherrack and the template itself, so find one before you use it. The upgrade keeps all enchantments on the diamond item.
How much debris to expect and how to speed it up
Ancient debris is rare by design. Even at Y 15, you are mining through a lot of netherrack for every block of debris. Knowing what to expect helps you plan and avoid giving up too early.
- Branch mining: expect a few debris per hour, depending on luck and how fast you mine.
- Bed or TNT mining: often several times faster, because each blast clears a large area at once.
- Bastion loot: bastion chests can contain ancient debris, netherite scrap and sometimes netherite ingots, so check every chest you find.
A few simple habits add up over a long session:
- Use an Efficiency V diamond or netherite pickaxe, and add Haste from a beacon if you have one.
- Keep your tunnels at the same Y level so you cover new blocks with every step.
- Space side tunnels so you do not mine the same blocks twice.
- Carry a stack of beds or TNT, plus blocks to seal off lava after each blast.
- Bring a shulker box so you do not have to run back to base when your inventory fills with netherrack.
Also remember that netherite gear does not burn in lava or fire. Once you have your first netherite tools, the risk of losing your gear drops a lot, which makes later mining trips more relaxed. If you are also looking for diamonds for the upgrade, read best Y level for diamonds.
FAQ
What is the best Y level for ancient debris?
Y 15 is the most popular choice. It sits in the densest band of debris and below the Nether lava sea at Y 31.
Can you mine ancient debris with an iron pickaxe?
No. You need a diamond or netherite pickaxe. Mining it with anything weaker drops nothing.
How much ancient debris do I need for full netherite?
A full set of armor plus a sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe uses nine ingots. Each ingot needs four scrap, so that is 36 debris.
Is bed mining safe?
It is safe if you put a block between you and the bed and stand a few blocks back. Wear armor, ideally with Blast Protection.
Does ancient debris generate the same in Java and Bedrock?
Both editions use similar height rules, with the most debris low in the Nether. Mining at Y 15 works well in either edition.
