How to Find Trial Chambers: Depths, Signs and Fast Methods
Trial chambers arrived in the Tricky Trials update (1.21) for both Java and Bedrock. They are large underground complexes built from copper and tuff, packed with trial spawners, vaults and the breeze. They are also the only place to get a heavy core, which you need to craft the mace.
Because they are buried deep and have no surface marker, trial chambers can be hard to find by wandering. This guide covers where they generate, what to look for in caves, how to use explorer maps and commands, and how to skip the search by checking your seed on a map.

Where trial chambers generate
Trial chambers generate underground in the Overworld. In Java Edition they are placed with their base roughly between Y -40 and Y -20, so most of the structure sits in the deepslate layer. They can appear under almost any Overworld biome, but not under the deep dark, where ancient cities take that space.
They are fairly common. Structure placement spreads them out on a grid, so in a typical world you can expect one every few hundred blocks. They only exist in chunks generated in 1.21 or later. If you load an old world, you need to travel into new, unexplored chunks to find them.
- Edition: Java 1.21+ and Bedrock 1.21+
- Depth: deep underground, mostly below Y 0
- Biomes: nearly any Overworld biome except the deep dark
- Size: large, with corridors, rooms and a central atrium
Signs of a trial chamber while caving
If you explore large caves near the bottom of the world, you may run straight into one. Watch for these clues:
- Tuff bricks and polished tuff in neat, man-made patterns. Natural tuff is common at depth, but cut and polished tuff in straight walls is not.
- Copper blocks, especially cut copper, copper grates and copper bulbs. Copper bulbs give off light, so a lit wall deep underground is a strong hint.
- Waxed copper that does not oxidize. The copper in trial chambers is waxed, so it stays the same colour.
- Breeze sounds or the whoosh of wind charges through a wall.
Caves and aquifers often cut into the structure, so a cave opening at Y -30 with copper in the walls is worth following. Mining a straight tunnel at around Y -30 also gives you a decent chance of hitting a corridor.
Using a trial explorer map or the locate command
Cartographer villagers can sell a trial explorer map once they reach the journeyman level. The map shows your position and marks the nearest trial chamber. Breed villagers, assign a cartography table, and trade up until the journeyman trade appears. This takes some time but works in survival without cheats.
If cheats are on, the locate command is instant:
- Java: /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers
- Bedrock: /locate structure trial_chambers
The command returns X and Z coordinates. The Y value is not given, so dig down near those coordinates and look for copper and tuff around Y -20 to Y -40. Remember that using commands disables achievements in Bedrock worlds.
Find trial chambers from your seed
The fastest survival-friendly method is to look at your world seed on a map. Enter your seed and version in the trial chambers finder or on the main seed map, and every chamber near you appears as a marker. Click one to copy a /tp command, or just note the X and Z and walk there.
This works because structure positions are fixed by the seed and the game version. As long as you pick the right edition and version, the markers match your world. If you do not know your seed, see how to find your seed. To understand what the colours and icons mean, read how to read a seed map.
Since the map gives only X and Z, dig straight down at the marker. Use a staircase pattern so you never fall into a cave or lava.
What is inside: spawners, vaults and the mace
Trial chambers are a combat challenge with great loot. Here is what you will meet:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Trial spawner | Spawns waves of mobs based on how many players are nearby, then drops rewards and trial keys. |
| Vault | Opens with a trial key and gives loot once per player. |
| Ominous vault | Opens with an ominous trial key. Can give a heavy core, enchanted gear and more. |
| Breeze | A wind mob that drops breeze rods, used for wind charges and the mace. |
The mace is crafted from a heavy core and a breeze rod. Heavy cores come only from ominous vaults. To activate ominous trials, you need the Trial Omen effect, which you get by entering a chamber while you have Bad Omen. Ominous bottles, dropped by raid captains, give Bad Omen.
Tips for clearing a trial chamber
- Bring a shield. Skeletons, strays and bogged spawn often, and the breeze shoots wind charges.
- Light up corridors. Normal mobs can still spawn in dark parts of the structure.
- Use the cooldown. After a trial spawner is beaten it goes quiet for about 30 minutes, then resets.
- Each vault is per player. In multiplayer, every player can open each vault once.
- Bring a bucket of water. Many chambers connect to aquifers and lava pockets.
- Mark the entrance. The layout is a maze of similar rooms, so place torches on one side to find your way out.
Trial chambers are a good early goal. The rewards include diamonds, enchanted books, emeralds, golden apples and the guster and flow armor trim templates and pottery sherds.
Common mistakes when searching
Many players spend hours looking for trial chambers in the wrong places. Avoid these common mistakes:
- Searching near the surface. Trial chambers are buried deep. Caving at Y 20 or Y 40 rarely finds one. Spend your time below Y 0 instead.
- Exploring old chunks. If your world started before 1.21, the area around your base will never have a chamber. Head out to land you have never loaded.
- Using the wrong edition on a seed map. Java and Bedrock place structures differently. A marker from the wrong edition points to empty stone.
- Digging straight down. It is tempting when you know the X and Z, but you can drop into a cave, lava or the middle of a spawner room. Dig a staircase and keep a bucket of water ready.
- Going in underprepared. Trial spawners scale with the number of players nearby, and ominous trials are much harder. Bring iron or diamond armor, food, a bow and plenty of arrows.
Once you know the coordinates, the hard part is over. The digging only takes a few minutes. Plan your trip so you arrive with full health, a spare set of tools and room in your inventory for the loot. A shulker box or a few extra chests placed near the entrance are useful for storing finds between runs.
If you also want to explore the deep dark on the same trip, read how to find an ancient city. Both structures sit at similar depths, though they never overlap.
FAQ
What Y level are trial chambers at?
Trial chambers generate deep underground, mostly between about Y -40 and Y -20. Dig down to the deepslate layer near the coordinates you found.
Do trial chambers spawn in old worlds?
Only in chunks that were generated in version 1.21 or later. Travel to unexplored areas of an older world to find them.
How do I get a heavy core?
Heavy cores come from ominous vaults inside trial chambers. You need an ominous trial key, which drops from ominous trial spawners while you have the Trial Omen effect.
Can I find trial chambers without cheats?
Yes. Buy a trial explorer map from a journeyman cartographer, or enter your seed in the SeedMapView trial chambers finder to see every chamber on the map.
Are trial chambers the same in Java and Bedrock?
They exist in both editions and work the same way, but structure positions differ between editions for the same seed. Pick the right edition on the map.
