How to Find a Mushroom Island and Claim a Mob-Free Base
Mushroom islands are one of the rarest sights in Minecraft. The biome is called mushroom fields, and it is covered in purple mycelium, giant mushrooms and red and white mooshrooms. Its best feature is simple: hostile mobs do not spawn there naturally.
That makes a mushroom island a dream base, but they are hard to find. They sit far out in the ocean, often thousands of blocks from spawn. This guide explains where they generate, how to search for one, and how to find one instantly by checking your seed on a map.

Where mushroom islands generate
Since the 1.18 update, Minecraft decides biomes using several noise values, including one called continentalness. It measures how far inland a spot is. Mushroom fields use the lowest continentalness values of all, which is the most ocean-like part of the world, even lower than deep ocean.
In practice, this means:
- Mushroom islands appear surrounded by ocean, usually deep ocean.
- They are often far from the mainland, so you will not see them from the coast.
- Size varies a lot, from a small rock to an island several hundred blocks across.
- Some worlds have none within thousands of blocks of spawn.
Mushroom fields can also appear as a mushroom shore in older versions. In 1.18 and later, the shore biome was removed, and the whole island counts as mushroom fields.
Why a mushroom island is worth the trip
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| No hostile mob spawns | No zombies, creepers or skeletons spawn naturally, day or night. |
| Safe caves below | The no-spawn rule also covers caves under the biome. |
| Mooshrooms | Milk them with a bowl for mushroom stew, or shear them for mushrooms. |
| Huge mushrooms | A steady supply of mushroom blocks and mushrooms. |
| Mycelium | Lets mushrooms grow in any light level. |
Spawners, such as those in a dungeon or mineshaft under the island, still work. Mobs can also walk in from nearby biomes, and raids can still happen if you bring Bad Omen. Other than that, the island is about as safe as Minecraft gets.
How to search for one in survival
Searching the ocean by hand takes patience. These tips make it faster:
- Use a boat. Boats are much faster than swimming. A boat with a chest lets you carry supplies.
- Head for deep ocean. Deep ocean is darker blue and has no visible floor. Mushroom islands sit inside or next to these regions.
- Travel in straight lines. Pick a direction, note your coordinates and go. Turn 90 degrees after a few thousand blocks and repeat.
- Raise your render distance. Purple mycelium and giant mushrooms are easy to spot from far away.
- Travel by day. Drowned are hard to see at night, and the island stands out better in daylight.
Bring a bed, food and a compass, plus some way of marking your path. Sleeping in the boat is not possible, so land on any small island to rest at night. A lost boat trip in the open ocean can last a long time.
Find a mushroom island from your seed
Biome layout is set by the seed, so the quickest way is to look it up. Enter your seed in the mushroom fields finder or on the main seed map and pick your version. Mushroom fields show up as a distinct colour, usually small patches in the middle of the ocean.
Zoom out to search a wide area. When you find one, note its X and Z coordinates, or copy a /tp command if cheats are on. If you want to know how far it is from spawn, the spawn finder shows your world spawn point.
Since 1.18, Java and Bedrock generate the same biomes for the same seed, so a mushroom island found on the map should be in the same place in both editions. Small differences can still occur, so check before a long journey.
Using the locate command
If cheats are enabled, you can find the nearest mushroom fields with a command:
- Java: /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields
- Bedrock: /locate biome mushroom_fields
The command searches a limited radius, so it may fail if the nearest island is very far away. If it does, teleport a few thousand blocks and try again. Using commands disables achievements in Bedrock worlds.

Building a base on a mushroom island
- Light is optional, but nice. You do not need torches to stop spawns, but light helps you see.
- Bring dirt for farming. Mycelium does not take crops. Hoe dirt or grass blocks you bring with you.
- Breed mooshrooms. Use wheat. Brown mooshrooms are rare, but a red one struck by lightning turns brown.
- Make suspicious stew. Feed a brown mooshroom a flower, then milk it with a bowl to get stew with a status effect.
- Connect to the mainland. Use the Nether. Build a portal on the island and link it with the nether portal calculator.
Mushroom island myths
Mushroom islands have a few common myths. Here is what is true and what is not:
- "Mushroom islands are always tiny." Not true. Some are small rocks, but others span several hundred blocks and have room for a large base and farms.
- "You cannot grow anything on them." You cannot plant crops on mycelium, but you can bring dirt and farm normally. Mushrooms grow well on mycelium in any light.
- "Nothing can hurt you there." Hostile mobs do not spawn naturally, but drowned can still come from the ocean nearby, and mobs can follow you in. Fall damage and lava are still dangers too.
- "Mushroom islands only exist far from spawn." They are usually far out, but some seeds have one close to spawn. A seed map shows you quickly.
- "Updating the game adds mushroom islands." Updates only affect new chunks. Explored ocean will not change into mushroom fields.
Mooshrooms are passive and only spawn naturally in this biome. If you want them at another base, you can lead them with wheat across a bridge or use a boat. Mooshrooms can be pushed into a boat and rowed across water, which is slow but works well for a short distance.
If you are planning a long ocean trip anyway, ocean monuments often sit in the same deep ocean areas. See how to find an ocean monument for that.
FAQ
How rare are mushroom islands?
They are one of the rarest Overworld biomes. Many worlds have none within a few thousand blocks of spawn.
Do mobs spawn on mushroom islands?
Hostile mobs do not spawn naturally in mushroom fields, including caves underneath. Spawners still work and mobs can wander in from nearby.
Can I find a mushroom island in an old world?
Only in chunks that have not been generated yet. Biomes in explored chunks do not change when you update.
Are mushroom islands the same in Java and Bedrock?
Since 1.18, the same seed gives the same biome layout in both editions, so mushroom islands are usually in the same place.
How do I get a brown mooshroom?
Wait for lightning to strike a red mooshroom during a thunderstorm, or breed two mooshrooms for a small chance of a brown calf.
