The Best Y Level for Diamonds and How to Mine Them
Diamonds are the ore every player hunts first. Finding them is mostly about digging at the right height. Since the Caves and Cliffs update in 1.18, the answer changed a lot, and many old tips are now wrong.
This guide gives you the best Y level for diamonds in current versions and in older ones. It also covers why strip mining beats caving, and how to mine safely near lava. If you want to see likely diamond spots in your own world, try the diamond finder with your seed.
The short answer: Y -59
In Java and Bedrock 1.18 and later, diamonds generate from Y 16 down to the bottom of the world. They get more common the deeper you go. The very best layers are the lowest ones you can comfortably mine.
Bedrock starts appearing at Y -60 and fills more of each layer down to Y -64. So Y -59 is a great choice. You mine a 2-block-tall tunnel at Y -59 and Y -58, and you never have to dig around bedrock. Y -58 works just as well if you prefer to stand on that layer.
| Version | Diamond range | Best level to mine |
|---|---|---|
| 1.18 and later (Java and Bedrock) | Y 16 to Y -64 | Y -59 or -58 |
| 1.17 and older (Java) | Y 1 to Y 16 | Y 11 or 12 |
Why deeper is better
Diamond ore uses a triangle-shaped distribution. The game aims the peak below the bottom of the world, so the number of diamonds keeps rising all the way down. At Y 16 they are very rare. Near Y -59 they are at their most common.
Diamonds also come in a few flavors:
- Small veins of a few ores, the most common type.
- Large veins that can hold up to around 10 ores.
- Buried veins that only generate fully surrounded by stone.
Below Y 0 you will mostly find deepslate diamond ore. It drops the same diamond, but deepslate takes longer to mine. An Efficiency pickaxe helps a lot down there. Deepslate also makes tunnels slower to dig, so expect fewer blocks per minute than in stone. That is a fair trade for the higher diamond count, and it is why many players carry two pickaxes on long trips.
Strip mining beats caving for diamonds
Since 1.18, diamond ore is less likely to generate when it would touch air. Many veins get skipped if they sit next to a cave, and buried veins never touch air at all. That means caves show fewer diamonds than solid rock.
Caving is still fun and fast, and you will find some diamonds. But for steady results, branch mining works better:
- Dig a main tunnel at Y -59, 2 blocks tall.
- Every few blocks, dig side branches out to the left and right.
- Leave 2 or 3 blocks of stone between branches. This lets you see every ore without mining it all.
- Keep each branch long and straight so you stay oriented.
Branches 3 blocks apart give you a good balance of speed and coverage.
Staying safe at the bottom of the world
The deepest layers have dangers of their own:
- Lava. Below Y 0 there are many lava lakes and aquifers filled with lava. Never dig straight down, and never mine the block you are standing on.
- Bring a water bucket. It puts out fire and turns lava into obsidian when poured on it.
- Watch for the deep dark. If you see sculk, you are near the Warden's home. Sneak or leave. Check the ancient city guide for details.
- Light up your tunnels. Mobs spawn in darkness, and deepslate caves are huge.
- Tools. You need an iron pickaxe or better to get diamonds. Stone or gold picks break the ore with no drop.
Get more diamonds per ore with Fortune
Fortune is the biggest boost you can get. Without it, each diamond ore drops one diamond. With Fortune III, a single ore can drop up to 4, and about 2.2 on average.
A common trick is to mine ores with Silk Touch first, then place them and mine them later with a Fortune pickaxe. That way you keep the ore blocks until you have the best tool.
Mining ores also drops experience, which helps you enchant more gear.
Old versions and other ways to find diamonds
On Java 1.17 and older, diamonds generate from Y 1 to Y 16. The classic advice is Y 11 or 12. Lava lakes are common at Y 10 and below, so mining at Y 11 keeps them at your feet where you can see them.
Other good sources of diamonds:
- Chests in villages, shipwrecks, buried treasure, desert pyramids, jungle temples and strongholds.
- Trial chambers, which can drop diamonds from vaults.
- Ancient cities, which can hold enchanted diamond gear.

Use your seed to pick a mining spot
The Y level is the most important choice, but where you dig matters too. A few minutes with a map can save an hour underground.
- Enter your seed in the diamond finder and choose your edition and version.
- Look at the area around your base. Pick a spot close to home, away from huge oceans. Digging under deep water is slow and risky because of aquifers.
- Copy the coordinates and dig a staircase down to Y -59. Stairs are safer than a straight drop and give you an easy way back up.
Remember that diamond positions are not the same between Java and Bedrock, even on the same seed. Always set the right edition.
Mountain bases have one downside. The surface may be at Y 150 or more, so getting to Y -59 is a long dig. Lowlands or a ravine near home make the trip shorter.
If you find a large cave that reaches the deepslate layers, it is still worth a look. You can grab exposed diamonds quickly, then start your branch mine from the cave floor. Just remember that caves hold fewer diamonds than solid rock, so do not rely on them alone.
How many diamonds should you expect? It varies, but a long branch mining session at Y -59 usually gives a few full veins. With Fortune III, that is often enough for a full set of tools and armor in one trip.
FAQ
What is the best Y level for diamonds in 1.21?
Y -59 is the best level in 1.18 and later. Diamonds get more common the deeper you go, and Y -59 is just above most of the bedrock.
Is the best diamond level the same in Bedrock?
Yes. Since 1.18, Bedrock uses the same diamond range of Y 16 down to the bottom of the world, so Y -59 is a good choice there too.
Why do I find fewer diamonds in caves?
Diamond ore is often skipped when it would touch air. Solid rock has more diamonds than cave walls, so strip mining is more reliable.
What Y level was best for diamonds before 1.18?
In 1.17 and older, diamonds generate from Y 1 to Y 16. Mining at Y 11 or 12 was the classic choice.
How many diamonds does Fortune III give?
Fortune III can drop up to 4 diamonds per ore, with an average of about 2.2.
