How to Find an Ancient City and Loot It Safely
Ancient cities are the deepest and most dangerous structures in the Overworld. They hold some of the best loot in the game, including Swift Sneak books and enchanted golden apples. They are also home to the Warden, a mob that can take you out in two hits.
This guide covers how to find an ancient city by reading the terrain, which Y level to search, and how to raid one quietly. If you know your seed, the ancient city finder shows every city on the map so you can dig straight down to one.
Where ancient cities generate
Ancient cities only generate in the deep dark biome. The deep dark is a cave biome found deep underground, below Y 0. It is marked by sculk blocks, sculk veins, sculk sensors and sculk shriekers, and it is pitch black.
The key clue is on the surface. The deep dark generates under areas with high, rugged terrain, which usually means mountain ranges. So if you stand on tall peaks, there is a decent chance a deep dark sits far below you. Flat plains and oceans are poor places to look.
The city itself sits very low. Its main floor is around Y -51, close to the bottom of the world. Cities are large, often over 100 blocks across, so once you are in the right spot you will not miss them.
Method 1: use a seed map
Ancient cities are hard to find by luck because they are buried deep. A seed map removes the guesswork.
- Look up the seed of your world (the /seed command in Java, world settings in Bedrock).
- Open the ancient city finder and set your edition and version. Ancient cities exist in Java 1.19 and later, and in Bedrock 1.19 and later.
- Pick a city close to you and copy its coordinates.
- Travel there and dig down carefully to around Y -45, then tunnel in from the side.
Digging in from the side is safer than dropping in from above. Falling into the city makes noise and can trigger sculk sensors right away.
Method 2: explore under mountains
Without a seed, use the terrain:
- Find a big mountain range. Jagged peaks, frozen peaks and stony peaks are good signs.
- Go deep. Use caves to reach Y -40 or lower. Large cave systems save a lot of digging.
- Look for sculk. When you see sculk spreading on cave walls, you are in or near a deep dark.
- Follow the darkness. Inside the deep dark, you get the Darkness effect when a shrieker goes off. Back off and move more quietly.
You can also use /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city in Java, or /locate structure ancient_city in Bedrock, if cheats are on.
Understanding sculk and the Warden
The deep dark has its own alarm system. It is worth understanding before you go in.
- Sculk sensors detect vibrations like walking, placing blocks, opening chests and eating. They give off a redstone signal.
- Sculk shriekers react when a sensor nearby picks you up, or when you step on them. Each shriek raises a hidden warning level.
- The Warden spawns after the fourth warning. It is blind, so it hunts by sound and smell. It has 500 health and hits very hard, so fighting is rarely worth it.
The warning level drops slowly over time if you stay quiet. If a Warden spawns, back away quietly or distract it by throwing snowballs or eggs. The noise draws its attention away from you.
How to raid an ancient city safely
- Sneak everywhere. Walking while sneaking does not trigger sculk sensors.
- Bring wool or carpet. Wool blocks vibrations from passing through it. Place carpet over sensors or walk on wool to stay quiet.
- Light up the area. Torches help you see. Note that the Darkness effect will still pulse when a shrieker goes off.
- Break shriekers you can reach. Use a hoe for speed. Mining a block with a hoe still makes some noise, so be careful.
- Avoid eating near sensors. Eating creates vibrations too.
- Plan an exit. Know where you came in, and keep a water bucket or ender pearls ready.
Ancient city loot worth the risk
Chests in ancient cities can contain:
- Swift Sneak books. This enchantment only comes from ancient city loot. It lets you move fast while sneaking.
- Echo shards, used with a compass to craft a recovery compass that points to where you last died.
- Enchanted golden apples and enchanted diamond leggings or hoes.
- Music disc fragments for the "5" disc, plus the rare "Otherside" disc.
- Silence armor trims, one of the rarest trims in the game.
Look for the big reinforced deepslate frame in the middle of the city. It looks like a portal but cannot be activated. Many players use it as a landmark while exploring. Chests are spread across the whole city, often in small side buildings, so take your time and check every corner.
Gear checklist before you go down
Ancient cities punish players who arrive unprepared. Use this checklist before you start digging:
- Wool or carpet: a stack or two. It blocks vibrations and lets you cover sensors.
- Snowballs or eggs: throw them to make noise away from you and lead a Warden off.
- Ender pearls: a fast escape when things go wrong.
- Torches: lots of them. The deep dark is completely unlit.
- Food: eat before you enter, not inside, since eating makes vibrations.
- Blocks: to seal a tunnel behind you or wall off a Warden.
- Armor and a water bucket: for falls and lava on the way down.
Swift Sneak leggings help a lot on return trips, but you can only get the enchantment from the city itself.
It is also smart to set your spawn with a bed near the entrance tunnel. If you die, your gear drops right in the city, and you will want to reach it fast. A recovery compass, made from echo shards, points straight back to your last death spot.
Finally, think about light. Night vision potions do not stop the Darkness effect, but they help between pulses. Ancient cities often sit next to big caves, so there are many dark spots where other mobs can spawn. Light as you go and you will have a much calmer raid. If you want more deep loot after this, try trial chambers, which are less deadly and also hide under the surface.
