Java Edition 1.18, Caves and Cliffs Part II, was released on November 30, 2021. It rebuilt Overworld generation from the ground up. This Minecraft 1.18 seed map covers 1.18 to 1.18.2. Enter your seed to see the new mountains, huge caves and fresh biome layout, plus every structure the generator places.
Everything Changed: New Terrain and Height
Version 1.18 is the biggest world-generation update in Minecraft history. The world now runs from Y −64 to Y 320, instead of 0 to 255. Mountains reach far higher, and deepslate fills the space below Y 0.
Biomes are now picked from climate values such as temperature, humidity and how far inland you are. As a result, the whole biome map was redrawn. New biomes include:
- meadows, groves and snowy slopes
- jagged, frozen and stony peaks
- lush caves and dripstone caves underground
Caves changed too. Huge "cheese" caves, long "spaghetti" tunnels and underground aquifers now fill the world. Ores follow new height ranges, and large copper and iron ore veins snake through the stone.
Why Pre-1.18 Seeds Look Completely Different
Because the generator changed, a seed from 1.17 gives a totally different world in 1.18. Spawn moves, oceans move, and villages appear in new places. Do not use an old seed guide for this version.
Upgraded worlds are a special case. Chunks you explored before 1.18 keep their old terrain. New chunks use the 1.18 generator, and the game blends the border between them. So the map shows what new land will look like, not your old areas.
Within this range, 1.18.2 made one structure tweak. If a bastion remnant tries to generate in a basalt delta, a fortress generates instead.
Java and Bedrock Share Terrain From Here
Starting with 1.18, Java and Bedrock build the same terrain and biomes from the same seed. Structures still use different placement rules, so villages and temples may not line up. Even so, a mountain on Java is the same mountain on Bedrock.
Moving to 1.19, the surface stays the same. The deep dark and ancient cities arrive underground.
Checking Your Version and Using the Minecraft 1.18 Seed Map
Check the bottom-left of the title screen, or your profile in the launcher's Installations tab. Any version from 1.18 to 1.18.2 fits this page.
- Switch to 3D view to see how tall the new peaks really are.
- Look for azalea trees on the surface. They often sit above lush caves.
- Mine diamonds deep, close to Y −59, where they are most common.
- Check spawn first. Your 1.18 spawn will be in a new place compared with 1.17.
Where the Ores Are Now
Version 1.18 gave each ore its own height range. Here are the key ones:
- Diamonds: below Y 16, most common near the bottom of the world
- Iron: peaks around Y 16, with a second band high in mountains
- Copper: most common near Y 48
- Coal: common high up, peaking around Y 96
- Gold: peaks near Y −16, with extra in badlands
- Emeralds: only in mountain biomes, high up
So use the map to find mountains for emeralds and iron, then dig deep for diamonds.
FAQ
Why does my seed look different in 1.18?
1.18 replaced the whole Overworld generator. Terrain, biomes and structures all moved, so pre-1.18 seeds give a completely different world.
What is the world height in 1.18?
The Overworld runs from Y -64 to Y 320 in 1.18 and later.
Do Java and Bedrock seeds match in 1.18?
Terrain and biomes match for the same seed from 1.18 on. Structures use different placement rules, so they often differ.
What happens to my old world when I update to 1.18?
Explored chunks keep their old look. New chunks use the 1.18 generator, and the game blends the borders between old and new terrain.
